Bandai capped our Gundam Card Game 1st Anniversary Event at 64 players. We filled all 64. Then a dozen more joined the waiting list. Think about that. A little over a year ago this game did not exist. Today, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, we can field more than 70 players for it. That didn't come from a shelf at a big box store. It came from tables, week after week, one new player at a time. Can GameStop do that? Can WalMart do that? Here's what gets overlooked once a game becomes popular: the grassroots work is what made it popular in the first place. Walmart and Target aren't building the community. They aren't creating the demand. They show up after someone else did. If a game wants staying power, if it wants to raise the next generation of players and last 30 wonderful years like Pokémon has, the community has to come first. And community gets built at your local game store. The event was an absolute blast. Thank you to everyone who played, and to everyone who waited for a seat. We'll keep building.
