This is why I do it.
I know how this sounds. Another shop owner tooting his own horn. I do have a healthy self image. But that is not what this is.
I just believe this one thing so strongly that I will keep saying it until it sticks.
Overcharging on release day helps no one but the store.
It does not help Pokémon.
It does not help the distributors.
It does not help the kids.
It does not help the hobby.
It helps one business hit one good week. That is it.
Here is what people miss. When a distributor sends us release day product, that is not a lottery ticket. That is trust. Pokémon made the cards. The distributor moved them. The parent drove across town. The kid saved up. Everyone upstream did their part so a 9 year old could open a pack on the day it came out.
The store is the last hand it passes through. We get to decide if the whole chain worked or not.
So we sell at MSRP. On release day. Every time. Even on the sets everyone knows will double by Friday.
Do we leave money on the table? Sure. Short term.
But that kid remembers where he got it. His mom remembers who did not take advantage of her. And ten years from now, when he is buying for his own kid, I already know where he is going.
Release day margin is a one week decision. Trust is a ten year decision.
I will take the ten years.
