Two guys walk into a pitch meeting at The Pokรฉmon Company.
On the other side of the table sit the biggest toy companies on Earth. Hasbro. Mattel. Jakks Pacific. Billion-dollar balance sheets. Global distribution. Decades of master license experience.
The two guys are from a company most people had never heard of.
They walked out with the license.
That's how Wicked Cool Toys became the master toy partner for Pokรฉmon. And the reason they won is the part everyone gets wrong.
It wasn't because they were scrappy. It wasn't because they had a clever product idea. It wasn't because they out-hustled the giants.
They won because they understood something the giants didn't:
The brand was already one of the most carefully managed IPs on the planet. Decades of thoughtful stewardship. A near-religious respect for what the brand meant to the kid opening a pack on a Saturday morning. The giants showed up with growth decks Wicked Cool showed up understanding that the brand didn't need to be maximized. It needed to be protected.
That's the part that's been rattling in my head all week.
Because for months I've been thinking about how Izzi's Gym shows up to The Pokรฉmon Company. And every version of that pitch in my head sounded like the Hasbro pitch.
Wrong frame.
TPCi already has thousands of retailers who can move units. That's not the problem they're solving. The problem they're solving โ every single day โ is ๐ธ๐ฉ๐ฐ ๐ฅ๐ฐ ๐ธ๐ฆ ๐ต๐ณ๐ถ๐ด๐ต ๐ธ๐ช๐ต๐ฉ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ช๐ด ๐ต๐ฉ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐ธ๐ฆ'๐ท๐ฆ ๐ด๐ฑ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ต ๐ต๐ฉ๐ช๐ณ๐ต๐บ ๐บ๐ฆ๐ข๐ณ๐ด ๐ฃ๐ถ๐ช๐ญ๐ฅ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ?
Who's going to sell at MSRP when everyone else is gouging? Who's going to put a kid in front of a scalper, every time? Who's going to treat a 9-year-old buying their first pack with the same care as the guy dropping $5,000 on a case? Who understands that the magic of Pokรฉmon isn't the cards โ it's the Saturday morning?
That's the pitch. Not "we'll grow it." But "we'll protect what makes it worth growing."
I think I've been preparing the wrong deck.
Time to build a new one.
