We had a problem at Izzi's Gym: only 60% of new customers were signing up for our free loyalty program.
The hypothesis? The only way to sign up was during checkout — and by that point, customers are ready to walk out the door. Even if it's fast and free, it's still friction at the worst possible moment.
So instead of optimizing the checkout process, we removed the problem entirely.
The solution: take the loyalty program signup away from checkout and let people do it anytime, anywhere.
Using Cursor and Claude, I built a simple app in under an hour that connects directly to Square's API. Customers can now sign up for our loyalty program or check their points balance on their own time, on their own terms.
