Lost another $5,000 yesterday.
Here's why: I sold every box of the new drop at MSRP, and only to kids.
First Partners Series 2 dropped yesterday. We were allocated 100 boxes, we sold all 100 at MSRP, and we made sure every single one went home with a kid.
Could we have marked them up? Of course. That $5,000 was sitting right there on the table. We walked away from it on purpose.
What gets me is this. Even with buy limits in place, scalpers across the country are still walking out of big box retailers with stacks of these boxes, then flipping them online above retail. The product that's supposed to be for kids never reaches them.
Pokémon could fix a huge chunk of this with two moves: support local game stores, and hold LGSs accountable for selling at MSRP. Do both, and the scalping problem shrinks fast.
I'll be honest, I don't get the current approach. Big box can move serious volume, but these boxes sell no matter who's behind the counter. Demand was never the problem. So if the product flies off the shelf either way, why not put it with the stores that actually protect the people it's meant for?
We'll keep choosing the kid. Every time.
