I collect stuff. Pokémon cards, books, autographs. Bought this one on Whatnot last week.
It's a salesman's sample book from the early 1900s. Basically a tiny version of a full-size general reference book — the kind that taught people everything from farming to letter writing back when that's how you learned things.
The thing that got me was the smell when I opened it. Old paper, somebody's house from a hundred years ago. You can't fake that.
What this actually was, was a sales tool. Some guy carried it around in a case and knocked on doors with it. He'd flip through the sample, take your order, and the real book showed up in the mail later.
No website to check. No reviews. No ChatGPT writing his pitch for him. He had to know the book. Know the price. Know what to say when somebody said no. All of it in his head.
I run a store and use most of those things he didn't have. POS system, SMS, AI for marketing copy. Not knocking any of it, it's why we can do what we do.
But I keep this on my desk anyway.
